Sheetal Surti, a 42-year-old mother of two from Birmingham, has lost all her skin pigmentation, and with it, her family.
Sheetal was born in 1980 to Indian parents. The dark-skinned little girl was very similar to her parents. At the age of seven, her sister saw a small white spot behind Surti’s ear. Then no one attached importance to this, but after a couple of days it began to grow and spread over the skin.
The girl’s parents immediately went to the doctor who diagnosed her with universal vitiligo.
Sheetal began to become very complex because of her appearance, and her relatives openly expressed fears about the girl’s skin cancer and the inability to marry in the future due to her appearance.
Her parents began to take her to India to see a doctor who tried to cure Surti’s illness with herbs and many hours of exposure to the sun. After seven years of trying, the doctors told the Sheetal family that it was impossible.
By that time, the girl was so tired of the numerous questions of her acquaintances about her skin and the views of passers-by that at some point she simply stopped paying attention to it.
But already in 2001, her skin turned completely white, and then Sheetal was completely lost. She felt black, but everyone perceived her as white.
More questions began to arise for the woman about why she is so unlike her parents and why she has an Indian name, although she is white. Surti did not hope to find love either, but a man met her at one of the parties.
He invited her on a date and said that he would not ask any questions about her skin, since his relative also suffers from vitiligo.
