On Sunday, March 2, the 46-year-old Emilia Pérez star accepted the Oscars 2025 Best Supporting Actress trophy on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Saldaña gestured at her mother while crying and yelled, «Mami! Mami!» before addressing the audience, saying, «My mom is here; my whole family is here.» This accolade is astounding to me.

Following a tearful speech in which she paid tribute to her family and team, including her husband Marco Perego and his «beautiful hair,» Saldaña declared, «I am the first American of Dominican descent to accept an Academy Award, and I know I won’t be the last. I am a proud child of immigrant parents with dreams, dignity, and hardworking hands. I hope.

Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Ariana Grande (Wicked), and Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown) were also nominated in this year’s Best Supporting Actress category. After winning at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTA Awards, and SAG Awards, Saldaña went into the Academy Awards as the front-runner to win Best Supporting Actress.
