During her recent appearance on the Trinny Woodall’s Fearless podcast, the 90-year-old Academy Award winner talked briefly about her eye condition and disclosed that she is no longer able to go out alone.

She declared on the show, «I will always have someone by my side.» «Now that I can’t see, I have to because I’ll trip over something or fall.»

«I always get anxious before an event. I don’t know why. I’m not good at being alone, and I never would be. Thankfully, I don’t have to now because I act as though I’m blind.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Dench has macular degeneration in her eyes, which can result in rapid and permanent loss of central vision. For those over 50, it is the leading cause of visual loss.

Following rumors regarding her vision, the Belfast actress first disclosed in 2012 that she had been diagnosed with macular degeneration.Dench described how she had been managing her deteriorating vision when she had to read scripts at a 2021 event for the London-based Vision Foundation.

«You find a way of just getting about and getting over the things that you find very difficult,» she said. «I’ve had to find another way of learning lines and things, which is having great friends of mine repeat them to me over and over and over again.»
