It has been reported that Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer.
According to sources who spoke to ABC News and NBC News, the 72-year-old veteran film producer is undergoing treatment in prison for chronic myeloid leukemia while serving out his 23-year term for rape and sexual assault at Riker’s Island in New York.
«Craig Rothfeld, Mr. Weinstein’s authorized legal healthcare representative in New York State, expresses profound dismay at the speculation surrounding Mr. Weinstein’s medical condition,» said Craig Rothfield, Weinstein’s representative and prison consultant, in a statement to PEOPLE on Monday, October 21.

According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic myeloid leukemia is a rare kind of bone marrow cancer that progresses slowly and results in an elevated blood white blood cell count. The news of Weinstein’s diagnosis comes as the 72-year-old has been dealing with a number of health problems lately.
Weinstein entered a not guilty plea to a second first-degree criminal sex charge on September 19, his first court appearance following heart surgery. Weinstein is charged with sexually abusing a woman in 2006 at a hotel in Manhattan.
