After 84 years of service with the same employer, a 100 yearold man sets a world record
Walter Orthmann has been working for the same textile company since he was 14 years old, in January 1938.
A Brazilian man who has worked for the same company for over 84 years has broken a world record. According to Guinness World Records, Walter Orthmann, 100, has worked for textile manufacturer Industrias Renaux S.A. for more than 80 years.
Orthmann began working in January 1938, when he was only 15 years old and his family was experiencing financial difficulties. Furthermore, the majority of the children were working at the time. «Back in 1938, children were expected to work to help support the family,» Orthmann explained.
«As the oldest son of five, my mother took me to look for work when I was 14.» He was a shipping assistant before being promoted to sales. He quickly advanced to the position of department manager.

Orthmann «Walter believes that the best part about having a job is that it gives you a sense of purpose, commitment, and a routine,» according to Guinness World Records.
According to Guinness World Records, he now has the longest career in the same company.
Orthmann’s story stands out at a time when businesses are struggling to retain employees due to low pay and toxic work environments.
According to the 100-year-old, one of the main reasons he stayed in the same job his entire life was the opportunity to travel and meet new people, as reported by PEOPLE. «Throughout his 84 years of work, he has seen many things change in the company, the country, and the world,»
Guinness said in a statement. «As a result, he has realized that staying current and adapting to different contexts is one of the most important aspects of the business.»
On April 19, 2022, Orthmann celebrated his 100th birthday at the company with family and friends. «When we do what we like, we don’t notice the passage of time,» Orthmann explained. «I don’t plan much, nor do I care.»
All I care about is that tomorrow will be another day in which I will wake up, get up, exercise, and go to work; you must become preoccupied with the present rather than the past or the future. What matters is the here and now.
So let us get to work!» Orthmann goes on to say that his desire to learn new things kept him moving forward at all times. For Orthmann, it was never about the record. His focus was always on maintaining his happiness and working in a positive environment.

«Despite never having considered breaking a record, I think my proudest achievement was being certified as the titleholder for the longest career in the same company,» the author said. He is now employed by ReneauxView, formerly Industrias Renaux.
As a child, he used to walk barefoot to school and excelled academically. However, when his family faced financial difficulties, he looked for his first job. He went to the weaving mill with his mother to apply for a job, and he was hired because of his fluency in German.
«I was given the chance to work as a salesperson. «I traveled to So Paulo and filled the production with orders equivalent to three months of work in less than a week,» he recalled.
His responsibilities increased as he advanced up the corporate ladder. By the 1950s, he was frequently traveling and meeting new clients. That was his preferred way of life. While constantly on the move, he amassed a sizable clientele network, many of whom he retained.
His adaptability was one of his defining characteristics, and it served him well during his 84 years with the company. He likes to stay up to date on procedures and practices and makes changes as needed.
He is in good health despite being 100 years old, thanks in part to a routine he enjoys and daily exercise. He still drives to work despite having excellent mental acuity and memory.
When asked for career advice for someone just starting out, he said it’s critical to work for a reputable organization that inspires you on a regular basis. He lives a relatively carefree life and dislikes making long-term plans.
