After being ejected from her TV show, Sparkle uses a medicine available on the illicit market to transform herself into a younger, better version of herself.

Dennis Quaid, 70, plays Harvey, the TV executive and one of the movie’s antagonists, while Margaret Qualley, 29, plays Sue, a younger version of Elisabeth.

Audiences have loved The Substance greatly, and it has an amazing 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.

Not everyone was impressed, though, as one moviegoer claimed on X that many others «walked out» of the theater because of the graphic nature of the picture. They said in the post, «As far as I’m concerned, we don’t have enough movies where that might happen.»

Another user wrote, «Some people walked out of the screening of The Substance we were at last night.» They had a similar experience at their local theater. Among the bloodiest movies I’ve ever seen.
