When Josh Hartnett first started his career, he aspired to be recognized as more than just a Hollywood hunk. The actor made his big-screen debut in 1998’s Halloween H20: 20 Years Later as Jamie Lee Curtis’ kid.
He will next be seen in the M. Night Shyamalan thriller Trap. The Faculty and The Virgin Suicides came next, and by 2001, notable parts in Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down had been played.

Teen fans quickly took a shine to Hartnett, but he tells PEOPLE that at the time, the heartthrob moniker was «frustrating» for him.
«I felt irritated since I thought people were more interested in my decisions than they actually were. Most audiences just want to be amused, according to 46-year-old Hartnett.

Although he preferred «characters who were quite a bit different from the average hero» at the time, shortly «I did a couple of heroic films and everybody wanted me to play those kinds of roles and that’s what I was being offered.»
«Really,» he says, «the door kind of shut on those other more interesting characters for me unless I sought them out and kind of help the directors get them made.»
