We are used to doing everything to appear more beautiful, slimmer, more attractive in our own eyes and in the eyes of other people. From childhood, we are imposed certain standards of beauty that must be followed. The same thing happened with Nikki Garza.

Nikki has had a rare disorder called hourglass syndrome for many years. From an early age, from about 8 years old, Nikki’s mother and grandmother forced the girl to constantly draw in her stomach.

It has become a habit, and not to say that it is useful. The girl began to do it herself, even when no one was watching her. “I remember my grandmother told me that I should pull my stomach in all the time. But I couldn’t breathe deeply and keep my belly in,» Garza recalls.

Even in the first years of this habit, Nikki had developed strange underbreast marks — like dark, rounded indentations. For 20 years, Nikki had no idea that this was, in fact, the hourglass syndrome.

“These marks have always been a part of me, and I did not look for any explanation why and when exactly they appeared,” the girl recalls. The therapists, whom Garza visited on a regular basis, also did not attach importance to the dents under the girl’s breasts.

But a couple of months ago, Nikki came across a video about a rare syndrome and noted that her case was similar to what was shown there. After that, Nikki began to study the issue of the hourglass syndrome in more detail.

Alexis Shupe, a physiotherapist in Houston, confirmed the existence of this syndrome and identified the root cause of its occurrence. It is associated with excessive muscle tension in the abdomen.

“Most often, this syndrome occurs in girls who want to appear slimmer and therefore retract the stomach on an ongoing basis,” says the doctor.
