In Emilia Pérez, Selena Gomez is defending her role. Eugenio Derbez criticized the 32-year-old singer and actress for speaking Spanish in the critically acclaimed musical drama.
Gaby Meza, a 63-year-old actor from Mexico, termed Gomez’s performance «indefensible» un a TikTok video clip from an upcoming episode of his podcast Hablando de Cine. He also stated that he and the others he watched the film with were shocked by her portrayal because she does not speak Spanish fluently.

The star of Only Murders in the Building responded to the criticism by writing, «I understand where you are coming from,» in the TikTok post’s comment section.
«I apologize; I did the best I could in the time allotted. doesn’t diminish the amount of effort and passion I put into this film.»

Emilia Pérez made its Netflix debut in November and garnered early praise during the awards season. Following its global premiere, the film won three awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including a nomination for best actress for Gomez and co-stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, and Zoe Saldaña.
It was also selected one of the top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute. Meza, the podcast’s host, praised Gomez as «very talented,» but she expressed dissatisfaction with her performance because of the language barrier.
