In November, why do members of the British Royal Family wear red poppies?
As the royal family observes Remembrance Sunday this weekend, the iconic item is probably going to be on display.
Members of the British royal family all choose a red poppy pin as a symbolic adornment every November.
In the past, members of the royal family such as Kate Middleton, Prince William, Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, King Charles, and Queen Camilla have worn the pins every November. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex even wore the pin after they resigned from their positions as royal family employees in 2020.
This coming Sunday, November 10, members of the royal family, including the Princess of Wales, are expected to wear the pin that is affixed to their attire when they go out for Remembrance Sunday.
The poppy has been used to honor military personnel who have lost their lives in combat since 1921. The poppy symbol is thought to have originated from John McCrae’s poem «In Flanders Fields,» which is about World War I, and the red flower is mostly connected to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth nations for Remembrance Day on November 11. The first stanza is as follows:
The poppies blow in the fields of Flanders.
Row after row, in between the crosses,
that indicate where we are and in the sky
The larks continue to sing fearlessly as they soar.
Amid the guns below, not much could be heard.
