Hoover’s best-selling 2016 book about Lily Bloom (Lively) and her lover Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni) becoming abusive in their relationship served as the inspiration for the film. Baldoni directed the movie, which debuted in theaters in August 2024.

On December 20, 2024, months after the movie’s summer premiere, Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment. According to Lively, Baldoni committed wrongdoing while the movie was being made.

Before shooting started after two strikes in Hollywood, the A Simple Favor actress also met with Baldoni and several of the film’s producers, with husband Ryan Reynolds acting as her agent, according to her complaint. According to the complaint, Baldoni later engaged crisis publicists to launch a vindictive smear campaign against her after his production firm accepted the safeguards.

A sympathetic Instagram Story was shared by Hoover the day after Lively submitted her complaint. Hoover replied, «@blakelively, you have been nothing but honest, kind, supportive, and patient since the day we met,» and included a picture of herself and Lively.
