Jessica Simpson’s first single, «Use My Heart Against Me,» drops from her new EP: Nashville Canyon: Part 1 — this week — just a month after announcing the end of her 10-year marriage to Eric Johnson, with whom she shares three children.
In this week’s PEOPLE, the star, 44, reveals how making new music in Nashville helped heal her aching heart – and shares the tunes that inspired the rediscovery of her own voice.
«I’ve grown up so much. I can handle so much,» she says. «Maybe I’m just meant to love a lot of people in my life.»
«I don’t know why my heart gets tossed around but I’m one of the lucky ones,» Simpson reflects. «At least I have my children and I still have Eric. He’s still very much a part of my life and will always be.»
Today, they continue to co-parent their three kids, Maxwell, 12, Ace, 11 and Birdie, 5, all of whom spent time at their rental home in Franklin, Tenn., just outside of Nashville while their mom worked on the EP, a collection of five soulful and rockabilly infused songs. The entire EP will be available on March 21.
