Selena Gomez has spoken out about the devastation caused by ‘impossible’ beauty standards and ‘unrealistic aspirations’.
The singer has already spoken out about the online scrutiny she has endured as a result of her notoriety, particularly during a trip to Sydney in 2018. In March 2018, the actress was caught in a biкini sunbathing on a yacht during a break from her tour in Australia.
But it wasn’t long before online trolls started mocking her figure and commenting on photos of her scars from her kidney transplant surgery in 2017. Selena responded
to the criticisms at the time, calling out the scrutiny and abuse on social media as she addressed no longer having a ‘teenager’s physique.
In a recent interview with Fast Company, Selena said: «The beauty myth — an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfil society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty.»
She went on to say that she had been battling with body image issues during a photoshoot as she adjusted to not having a ‘teenager’s figure,’ and that «none of the sample sizes were fitting, and that would make me feel embarrassed.»
However, how feasible is it to expect a regular woman’s figure to remain unchanged?
