The Princess of Wales is negotiating the expectations associated with her future role as Queen after finishing chemotherapy.
Kate Middleton is looking ahead and adjusting to a new reality as she ends the year with her endearing Christmas carol service.
Her husband, Prince William, 42, and their three children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6, attended the service on December 6. It was her fourth since 2020.
However, there was more poignancy to this year’s gathering at Westminster Abbey. It was her largest public appearance since finishing chemotherapy in September following a demanding year filled with health issues.
Jenny Powell, a community worker from Abergavenny, Wales, who attended, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, «I know how hard it would be to do something like this, putting yourself out there when you may not be feeling 100 percent.»
In front of 1,600 guests, Kate, 42, looked like her normal composed self as she and her family walked down the aisle holding hands while wearing a festive red Alexander McQueen cloak and sporting her typical blowout.
However, beyond the well-known façade, Princess Kate’s nearly yearlong battle with cancer has brought about a significant transformation. British pop artist Paloma Faith, who performed at the occasion, asked Kate how she was doing in a rare and unguarded moment. «I was unaware this year.»
