Suri Cruise honors mom Katie Holmes with latest name change, dropping dad’s last name
Suri Cruise «honored» her mother, Katie Holmes, with her name change, despite reports of a poor relationship with her father.
Suri Cruise was born in April 2006, one year after her mother Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise started dating.
The couple got engaged just seven weeks after meeting and revealed their daughter’s name in a press release shortly after she was born.
The name Suri comes from a Persian phrase that means «red rose.»
Later that year, they married in a Scientology ceremony in Italy. Katie filed for divorce six years later, apparently surprising Tom. This event is thought to have signaled the start of Tom’s estrangement from his daughter.
Katie’s decision to file for divorce was reportedly motivated by concerns that Tom would try to abduct Suri or that she would face intimidation after leaving the Church of Scientology.
Katie obtained custody of Suri and has since kept her daughter mainly out of the public eye, in stark contrast to Suri’s early years as one of the most renowned celebrity children of the mid-2000s.
According to Page Six, Tom hasn’t seen Suri since 2012. A source stated: «Katie has protected Suri and is a devoted mother. This is a girl who is a private citizen. «She has not lived her life in public.»
The adolescent recently made waves for reportedly abandoning her well-known surname after turning 18.
