So, despite a very British downpour, there was a strong crowd when the royals arrived at St Helier’s Royal Square to begin a two-day tour to the Channel Islands, the first by a monarch since the late Queen and Prince Philip in 2005.
As they walked about, brollies in hand, there were big smiles all around, as if two old friends had stopped by for a chat after a long absence. In a way, that’s exactly what was going on.
The late Queen once said she had to be’seen to be believed’. We’ve had occasion to remember those comments in recent weeks and months,
as both the King and Princess of Wales have taken time away from public life to undergo cancer treatment.
It’s tough not to be impressed by the reaction when royals return to our streets and TVs after months away.
