A young woman from Missouri has secretly donated a kidney to her father after keeping her plan hidden for nine months.
John Ivanowski was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a type of kidney disease, two years ago, according to Good Morning America.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the chronic illness «can lead to end-stage renal disease,» in which the kidneys no longer function.
Despite the prognosis, John told his daughter Delayne Ivanowski of Kirkwood, Missouri, that he did not want her to donate a kidney to him, according to GMA.
But the 25-year-old nurse persisted with her secret plan, which was realized on Feb. 16.
«‘I’m going to do it,’ I said. I don’t care how angry he is with me.’ «Delayne stated to ABC News. «At the very least, he’ll be living a normal life and not being hooked up to a machine,» she added.
According to a GoFundMe campaign started by his daughter, tests recently revealed that John was in kidney failure.
Delayne claimed that doctors told her father he didn’t have long to live. She was aware that John required a transplant and wanted to assist him in any way she could.
Despite her father’s objections, Delayne went ahead with her secret plan to donate a kidney to her father.
According to GMA, she kept her plans hidden for nine months as she went through the testing and procedures required to become a donor.
According to the GoFundMe page, John was on dialysis at the time and would receive treatment three times a week for at least three hours at a time.
However, the Missouri father was concerned about the physical consequences his daughter might face after donating one of her kidneys, especially since he lost his only other child to cancer more than 15 years ago, according to GMA.
«I thought, I lost my boy, and I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to Delayne,» he explained. «It was a major worry.»,
Delayne, on the other hand, was adamant about assisting her father. «I’m not good at hearing no,» she admitted to GMA.
Delayne eventually revealed that she had been approved as a donor for her father. The surgery was originally scheduled for October 30, 2022, but it was postponed after John was injured when he fell out of a tree while hanging a deer stand.
The transplant surgery was rescheduled for Feb. 16 and went off without a hitch.
According to GMA, workers at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Transplant Center did everything they could to keep Delayne’s secret while she and her father underwent surgeries.
Delayne surprised her father the next day by walking into his recovery room while still wearing her gown and attached to an IV.
In a TikTok video of the moment, which has been viewed over 4.4 million times, John can be heard reacting to the discovery.
«I just knew,» John told ABC News. «I was irritated. I was just stunned.»
According to the report, John has since changed his tune. «Not a single thing,» he said. «I’m feeling a lot better.»
Delayne is now raising funds for their medical bills through GoFundMe. Through the online fundraiser, nearly $10,000 has been raised.
