A lot of thought went into choosing the perfect actress to play Alex P. Keaton’s fiancée, a strong woman who could compete with the young Reaganite. Enter Pollan, who, at 25, was cast as Ellen Reed, an 18-year-old brainy dancer, opposite Fox, who, at 24, played 19 on the famous 1980s sitcom.
«People got tired of all those glitzy, power-hungry people jumping into the sack,» Pollan told People in 1986. «Alex and Ellen share an old-fashioned connection. It’s fresh and optimistic, with the sweetness of a first love.
Alex and Ellen, as is often the case in real life, did not last—but Fox and Pollan found their everlasting match and will celebrate 36 years of marriage on July 16.
It’s not like they clicked immediately…
In fact, the two rarely spent time together off set because, as Pollan told People, «I fly home to Kevin the moment filming ends.» Kevin was her five-year-old boyfriend, whom she met while performing in New York and lived with in a Manhattan apartment and a Connecticut farmhouse.
«We will probably marry, but I feel like we’re kids still, and marriage is such a grown-up thing,» she added. At the same moment, she stated, «I’m gushingly in love.»
