When a North Dakota child learns that his late father was interred without a gravestone, he makes the decision to spend his summer mowing lawns in the area.

Despite the fact that they were never met because the boy was adopted at birth, he wanted to pay tribute to his father’s memories as best he could.

The fact that Brandon Bakke didn’t know his biological father didn’t matter to him. Whatever their background or identity, everyone deserved to be properly buried, was all he knew.

Brandon was adopted at birth by a family in North Dakota. When the small kid started to ask questions about his biological parents as he grew older, his mother, Brandy Bakke, felt compelled to find out as much as she could for her son.

Asking Questions
Brandy was able to obtain Brandon’s birth parents’ last names in 2015. She chose to message Facebook users with the same name because their last name wasn’t very common. Brandy heard back from Tiffany, Brandon’s biological sister, the next year.

When Brandy and Brandon first wanted to get to know the family, she was concerned about how they would respond. She had no idea if they were eager to meet Brandon, and she feared upsetting the boy if things took a turn for the worst.

An Unfortunate Discovery
Tiffany reassured them that they were likewise eager to get to know Brandon, which quickly put an end to all of the mom’s worries.

Tiffany regrettably had some unfavorable information for Brandon. She stated that Terrance, his father, had passed away at age 56 the year prior from an asthma attack.

When Brandon heard this, he announced right away that he wanted to go to his tomb in Chicago. While Tiffany was happy to greet the visitors, she did mention that their father was interred without a headstone.

She revealed that their family had already experienced money difficulties in order to bury him, thus they were unable to purchase a tombstone for him.

A Selfless Sacrifice
At first glance, Brandon didn’t appear to be considering this. But a few days later, his actual emotions were apparent. He went over to his mother and handed her $175 that he had saved by mowing lawns.

He questioned his mother about whether there would be enough money to purchase a gravestone for his father. He said, “When I found out my dad’s grave didn’t have a stone, I got really sad and thought if I did something for him, he’d be proud.”

Brandy claims that her son found it offensive that anyone, especially his father, was interred without a gravestone. She went on to clarify what Brandon had said:

“It really bothered him that somebody, especially his father, was buried and he didn’t have any way for anyone to know who he was. He wanted to do something about it.”

Working Hard for a Stone
Brandon, who had always been quite the entrepreneur, set right to work as soon as he realized that a gravestone would cost more than simply $175.

He worked hard all summer long to accumulate about $400 in order to purchase a stone, and he pushed his lawn mowing services to more neighbors.

Throughout it all, Brandon and his biological sister Tiffany maintained communication with one another. It was via her that he learned, among many other things about his father, that he enjoyed cooking.

As a result, while he was considering what to carve into the stone, he settled on an icon of two hands serving a bowl of soup as a representation of Terrance’s charitable nature and his passion for cooking.

When Brandon finally got enough money to buy a stone, he carried a ceramic jar full of money with him into the store that assisted in the creation of the one-of-a-kind sculpture that was commissioned for his father.

Getting Ready to Depart for Chicago
Brandon was unable to hold back his tears when he first saw the gravestone. He gave his mother a hug, and she told him how proud she was of him for being able to accomplish what he had just done.

Dakota Monument, the company that was commissioned to make the gravestone, was moved by the narrative of Brandon’s unselfish love for his father and made the decision to donate the stone to the little child instead.

Brandon and his mother embarked on their trip to Chicago exactly two weeks after he was given the stone. They were joined in the cemetery by nearly a dozen members of his biological family who traveled from a variety of states specifically for the event.

Brandon was able to get to know his biological family after a private service, and vice versa. By the time their journey was up, Brandon had returned to North Dakota feeling motivated and excited about his future.

An Enthusiastic and Inspiring Project
Brandon, upon realizing that many other families were unable to buy gravestones, decided to start his own business and gave it the name “Mowing and Blowing for a Purpose.”

He specializes at mowing lawns and blowing snow, and the majority of the money he makes from these jobs goes into a memorial stone fund that he established to assist other families in paying tribute to departed loved ones.

The company’s goal, according to Brandon, is to “make sure nobody goes unknown in life.” Brandon is aware that his father Terrance would have been pleased with him even though he never met him.
