After meeting a small girl while on duty, an Arizona police officer gave her a lifelong home.

Brian Zach, a lieutenant with the Kingman Police Department, and his wife Cierra became parents to 4-year-old Kaila this summer.

Zach was serving as a police sergeant in March 2018 when he and his officers were called to check on Kaila’s apartment. Kaila is an abuse survivor, and Zach spent the night connecting with her, according to «Good Morning America.»

«We coloured, snacked… she held my hand, and she was just this cute little thing,» Zach explained. «When the cops arrived, they picked her up and drove her to the hospital.»

Zach, who has two older children, returned home after spending hours with Kaila and told his wife that he wanted the child to live with them.

Kaila was being treated for several injuries as a consequence of physical violence at the time. Zach stated that criminal charges had been filed against Kaila’s carers.

When child protective services were unable to find Kaila a quick placement, Zach and Cierra stepped in.

«She came with a sippy cup, a bag of clothes that didn’t fit her, and that was the end of it,» Zach explained.
«Within the second day, she began calling my wife’mom’ or’mommy’,’ he continued. «I was ‘guy’ for a week or two, and then she found out who dad was when she started preschool.»

Kaila was officially adopted by the Zachs on Aug. 18, 30 months after she was placed in their care, at Mohave County Superior Court in Lake Havasu City.

«We lived each week not knowing if she was going to go back to her biological parents, or how long we were going to keep her,» Zach explained. «Our goal was to love and care for this little girl for as long as it happened.»

The chief of police of the Kingman Police Department According to «GMA,» Rusty Cooper, «Lt. Brian Zach’s commitment to public safety is exemplified in his commitment and love for Kaila.» Brian and his wife Cierra are both wonderful parents.»

«They are dedicated to serving others and a cause greater than themselves,» Copper noted. «We are very proud of Brian and thankful that he and his family are members of the Kingman Police Department.»

Kaila adores preschool, animals, dancing, and pretend play when she goes on «cruises vacations» in her cardboard box, according to Zach.»She is so comical, so witty,» he added. «She’s just a side character.»

Zach advises families considering adoption not to be afraid of the procedure since it is «well worth it.»
