Life occasionally throws us into unexpected situations that we weren’t prepared for. Learning to react to and adapt to your environment is the secret to success in life.

But when you’re eight years old, you hardly ever think about what you’d do in an emergency. Fortunately, 8-year-old Mariah encountered a scary scenario and showed her courage…

On January 11th, Patricia Lynch, Mariah’s great-grandmother, showed up to pick her up from school as usual. She drove her great-granddaughter to her West Bloomfield home, something she had done countless times before.

As they backed into the driveway, Lynch got out of her blue Chevy Equinox and Mariah stayed inside.

Then everything changed overnight. The automobile was reversing direction. She assumed her car was in park, but it was actually in reverse, Mariah remembered in an interview. She attempted to stop it from going but collapsed and the tire «went over her foot.»

Little Mariah didn’t panic; instead, she reacted swiftly and carried out the actions she had witnessed her mother and other adults carry out when they arrived at a location. The eight-year-old remembered, «I pulled the keys out [of the ignition].»

«I didn’t know her foot was down there, but I knew she could still get wounded because her body was under there,» the second-grader said.

She quickly got out of the car and raced to ask her mother, Porchia Lane, for help. While at home, her mother had no cause to suspect anything was wrong.

Mariah’s cry for rescue were captured on camera by the family’s doorbell.
I originally didn’t hear her screaming when I opened the door since I assumed it was a routine drop-off. Because the driveway is a little hilly, she added, «I thought, ‘Well, maybe my grandmother was having a hard time pulling up the driveway.

My grandmother’s shoes were lying in the center of the driveway as I approached the car and started to hear Mariah cry. Even now, I couldn’t see her. I was simply in awe at this point.

Lane entered the yard and discovered her grandmother laying next to the vehicle. She realized that her 79-year-old grandma, who had her foot and leg jammed under a tire, had been able to remove herself.

Mariah was able to get a towel by herself. After wrapping her leg, Lane and I ran to the ambulance. She has incredibly quick cognitive processes.
The incident terrified little Mariah. She did, however, acknowledge that she felt better after visiting her great-grandmother at Trinity Health Oakland Hospital, where she had been undergoing therapy.

By God’s favor, Lane’s grandma didn’t break any bones, but she did need stitches and blood transfusions for the bruising, blisters, and blood loss she sustained.

Last week, Lane was released from the hospital, and she plans to help her grandmother with her physical therapy and recovery.

Lane is quite proud of her daughter’s quick thinking and offers advice for other parents regarding their kids. «Remember that your children are always concentrating. I actually spoke with Mariah and encouraged her to just trust her instincts and make the correct choices, Lane added. She was definitely more composed than I was in this circumstance, so it just makes me proud that she was able to think quickly.
