Despite the fact that women, along with men, sometimes study very difficult specialties and graduate from universities with honors, when applying for a job they are promised wages much lower than their male fellow students.
The Higher School of Economics decided to find out the reasons for this unfair attitude by conducting a large study of the labor market.
The analysis revealed that women who completed a bachelor’s degree receive a salary of 24% than members of the opposite sex. And with a master’s degree — by 26%.
Even at the stage of entering universities, all specialties are unofficially divided into «male» and «female». The former include programming, engineering, mathematics, and agriculture, while the latter include education, management, medicine, and various humanities.
The only neutral direction is still jurisprudence.
The study also noted that it is the female who more often graduates from universities with honors and gets a job in their specialty faster, but even these factors do not contribute to an increase in salary.
The reason for this was that women most often choose low-paid but stable institutions between high salaries and promising companies. In a study published by Kommersant, researcher Yulia Ostrovskaya attributes this choice to the fact that women, in addition to work,
need time to raise children.
It is these institutions that most often offer women paid sick leave, holidays, and no overtime work.
Experts are confident that this problem can be solved by introducing parental leave for men, flexible schedules for parents, wage indexation and support for families with children in general.
Many Russians take on extra work or overtime to achieve career advancement or earn more money. But it also has some serious downsides.
